Under the Appalachian Sky

On view in the MSV Shenandoah Valley Gallery from August 26 through June 24, 2018, Under the Appalachian Sky:  The Paintings of Barry Vance explores life in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. Artist Barry Vance’s ancestors settled near the headwaters of Frederick County’s Opequon Creek in 1735. His family heritage and personal connection to the land are underlying themes in all of his works. Often sketching and painting from memory, the paintings on view in Under the Appalachian Sky blend cultural and natural elements from various communities throughout the Shenandoah Valley. Vance works from his studios in Winchester, Virginia, and Brandywine, West Virginia, to create magnificent paintings that combine his admiration of the landscape with the past and present of the backcountry. The MSV display of Under the Appalachian Sky has been partially funded by the Woltz–Winchester Foundation.
