February 1 – August 3, 2025

This exhibition features prints created by Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000)— one of the most important artists of the twentieth century—between 1983 and 2000. One of the first nationally recognized Black artists in U.S. art history, Jacob Lawrence turned to the lessons of history and his own experience in his graphic work and paintings.

A nationally traveling exhibition, Jacob Lawrence: Three Series of Prints, includes his Hiroshima Series, the Genesis Series, 10 prints from the Toussaint L’Ouverture Series, and 5 other of Lawrence’s most significant prints depicting civil rights confrontations as well as scenes of daily life. The Genesis series recalls the artist’s childhood memories of Sunday school. The Toussaint L’Ouverture series recounts events of the Haitian revolution. In the Hiroshima series Lawrence focused on activities taking place when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city.

Jacob Lawrence: Three Series of Prints is drawn from the collections of Dr. and Mrs. Leon Banks and Alitash Kebede. The exhibition and museum tour were organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, California.
